CITY OF KENT
PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
September 12, 2006
COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Bob O'Brien, Les Thomas, and Ron Harmon, Chair
• The meeting was called to order by Chair Ron Harmon at 5 00 PM.
1. Approval of Minutes
Les Thomas moved to approve the minutes of the August 8, 2006 meeting.
The motion was seconded by Bob O'Brien and passed 3-0.
2. Introduction of Steve Strachan,Chief of Police
Mayor Suzette Cooke introduced the newly appointed Chief of Police, Steve Strachan,who was
formerly the Police Chief of Lakeville,Minnesota Chief Strachan spoke about his background and
stated he is excited about his new position with the City of Kent
3. Washington State Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School ¢rant—
AUTHORIZE
Chief Strachan introduced Debra LeRoy,Research and Development Analyst, and she explained the
purpose of the grant application. She stated that three elementary schools, Daniel, Horizon and
Meridian, have been identified by the Transportation Department of the Kent School District for the
purpose of this grant
Bob O'Brien moved to recommend that Council authorize the Kent Police Department
to apply for the Washington State Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant.
The motion was seconded by Les Thomas and passed 3-0.
4. Police and Fire Chaplain Pat Ellis—INFO ONLY
Pat Ellis, Jr. introduced himself and clarified his position as the Crisis Intervention Coordinator and
explained his role in the Fire and Police departments, as well as in the community He
acknowledged Fire Battalion Chief Tom Shepherd and Police Lieutenant Steve Ohlde for the support
they've provided him The Committee members thanked him for his commitment and dedication
5. Graffiti Removal—INFO ONLY
Police Captain Loma Rufener spoke about the rising graffiti in the City and surrounding areas and
some of the actions that can be used to eradicate the existing graffiti She mentioned that an
ordinance that will address graffiti in the City is the development stage
The meeting adjourned at 6:35 PM.
