HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Public Safety (Committee) - 03/20/1990 RECEIVED CITY OF KENT o P R 3 1990 SAFETY COMMITTEE OTV AM` '"TRAT00N MINUTES March 20, 1990 MEMBERS PRESENT: Brad Dupleich Geri Hanby Barb Keohane Janet Sholl Jan Cutting Beth Remington Rose Grabert Sue Viseth, Chair The Safety Committee met on Tuesday, March 20, at 2 : 30 p.m. in the second floor conference room of City Hall. The following information was discussed: FEBRUARY INCIDENTS/ACCIDENTS PUBLIC WORKS: Incident - Employee was climbing down ladder at pump station with can of paint thinner which splashed into his eye when lid of vault closed unexpectedly. The committee determined that this incident was preventable. Incident - Employee was rearranging supply closet when struck elbow on shelf behind her. The committee determined that this incident was preventable. FIRE: Incident - Employee had climbed to the second floor of burning building and stepped on nail which entered through the side of his boot. The committee determined that this incident was non-preventable. Incident - Employee' s hand was struck while removing equipment and hose at a commercial structure fire. The committee determined that this incident was preventable. OTHER BUSINESS Joe Sams, Loss Control Representative, from SWS provided a copy of a 1983 air quality survey that was conducted at City Hall . An employee in the Finance Department asked that a copy of a recent article in REDBOOK be distributed to the Safety Committee members. The article is entitled, Is Your Office Making You Sick? . Sue Viseth advised the committee that Joe Sams would be providing information about the cost of conducting an air quality study at the next meeting. She encouraged committee members to read the attached article prior to the next meeting. Beth Remington asked if there was an evacuation plan for City Hall in case of a fire in the building. The Fire Department will be contacted to see if such a plan exists. If not, the committee will request that an evacuation plan be designed and posted throughout City Hall. Barb Keohane asked if City employees had been trained in earthquake preparedness. No such training has been provided to City employees on this subject. Again, the Fire Department will be contacted to see if they can offer the committee assistance in this area. Brad Dupleich inquired on the status of the City' s Safety Awards Program. Sue Viseth informed the committee that the program was temporarily on hold pending a more thorough review by the Personnel Department and the committee. Currently no base line data exists in which to implement the program. The next scheduled meeting of the Safety Committee is TUESDAY, APRIL 17 at 2 : 30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at City Hall.
