Mille SUBJECT: Employee Accident On August 19, 1993 at approximately 1 : 35 PM Corrections Lieutenant George E. Burke was involved in a minor injury accident while driving a City vehicle . The accident was investigated by Officer Todd P. Durham. There were no supervisors or administrators at the scene. The facts of the case are relatively simple. The Hamington vehicle was directly in front of Burke. Both vehicles were stopped east bound on East Willis Street at South Central Avenue for a red traffic light . Hamington made a free right turn and proceeded south bound on South Central Avenue and then had to stop for a truck preparing to make a right turn into the 7-11 store on the • southwest corner of East Willis Street and South Central Avenue. Lieutenant Burke , who had received a green light, then proceeded to make his right turn and struck Hamington' s vehicle from behind. Officer Durham provided a hand written statement outlining the facts of the case and possible contributing factors . Officer Durham stated there are bushes at the intersection that may have prevented Lieutenant Burke from looking around ' the corner and seeing the vehicles stopped. He also felt the size of the driveway into the 7-11 may have been the reason the truck had to stop in the roadway. My personal feeling is that Lieutenant Burke was inattentive . He has driven this route hundreds of times and should be very familiar with the intersection and the conditions that exist there. I do not know why he was inattentive, but if he had been concentrating on his driving and what was going on around him I feel he could have avoided the accident . A • C', rV ,
