Grimm of Inslee, Best, Chapin, Uhlman and Doezie, representing Local 1747, IAFF, Kent Firefighters and Lieutenant John Evans, was called to order by Chairman T. Richard Ried at 8:07 a.m. at Fire Station Headquarters. Also in attendance were: Commission member Donald Whitener, Mr. Grimm, Attorney Mirk, Administrative Assistant Webby, Interim Chief Freelove, Assistant Chief Berg and Lieutenant Evans. Also present: Firefighters Jim Moline and Jeff Kurle and Firefighter/Mechanic Woodin. Attorney Mirk explained that the parties involved have had a meeting with the attorneys and the administration and it was agreed by all parties that the conduct of the confrontation was not condoned. It was also agreed that the procedures of the suspension of Lieutenant Evans were not in accord with the Fire Department rules and regulations and that the action of suspension has been rescinded with no disciplinary action to be taken. Mr. Grimm commented that the main concern was for everyone to work together. Due to the agreement reached by all concerned parties, a formal hearing was not necessary ; the suspension was resolved and no record of it will remain in Lieu- tenant Evan's file. • Hearing was closed. Richard Ried Chairman • KENT CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION`MEETING`MINIITES April2, 1981 • This special meeting was called to order by Chairman T. Richard Ried following the hearing at Fire Station Headquarters. Present were: Commission member Donald Whitener, Administrative Assistant Webby, Interim Chief Freelove, Assis- tant Chief Berg, Firefighter/Mechanic Woodin and other Fire Department personnel. As Administrative Assistant Webby was to give a general review of each candidate's scoring for Fire Chief, the meeting went into executive session at this time. When the meeting resumed at 9:30 a.m. , the standing in order of the candidates on the Fire Chief Eligibility List was read: Norman G. Angelo, Marvin N. Berg, Hubert H. Crawley, James E. Hicks and Robert B. Gibson. It was moved and seconded to certify the list for Fire Chief as submitted. Motion carried. Mr. Webby requested that the background investigation and psychological examination which, if necessary, will take place before the selection is made, be on a pass-fail basis. He commented that all the candidates did very well and that he was very pleased with them. He added that allAhe assessors also performed extremely well, putting in long hours, and coming up with a very consensus scoring. Chairman thanked Mike and the assessors for all the hours put into the assessment center. It was moved and seconded to amend the previous motion that if the administration felt it was necessary to conduct a psychological or background investigation, or both, on a pass-fail basis, and if the candidate fails to pass either of these tests, he would be removed from the Eligibility List. Motion carried. Mr. Webby commented that the press will probably be interested in the names of the successful candidates. Chairman Ried explained it was an open meeting so the names can be disclosed.
