HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Civil Services Commission - 01/20/1980 KENT CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES January 20, 1980 The regular monthly meeting was called to order by Acting Chairman, Richard T. Ried. Present were: Commissioner Donald Whitener, Chief Foster, Chief Skewes, Assistant Chief Berg, Captain Byerly and Detective Miller. The minutes of the meeting of December 20, 1979 were approved. Chief Foster reported that nine applicants from the Firefighter Eligibility List are in the process of being hired, taking it through No. 13 on the Eligibility List. The letter of resignation effective January 4, 1980 from Officer David N. Straight was read and accepted into the records. The memo to Charles Dawson from Deputy Chief Freelove regarding termination was read and accepted into the records. Chief Foster gave reasons for the termi- nation effective January 15, 1980. The letters to Lorna K. Walls and Scott A. Somers from Chief Skewes regarding their employment as Probationary Law Enforcement Officers effective January 21, 1980, was read and accepted into the records. The letter from Chief Skewes to Sgt. D.E. ByerLy regarding his promotion to Captain was read and accepted into the records. The Commission also congratu- fated Captain Byerly on his promotion. Chief Skewes reported there are 18 applicants for the Sergeant's examination. He will confer with Dr. Smith for his recommendations for an examination. The Com- mission authorized Chief Skewes to call a special meeting of the Commission to approve the examination. Chief Foster requested an examination for the position of Lieutenant. A motion was made and seconded to authorize a Lieutenant's examination for the Fire De- partment. Motion carried. Since the Law Enforcement Eligibility List has almost been exhausted, Chief Skewes requested an entry level examination. He has contacted the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and they would be willing to come to give the examination. The city of Renton is also interested in sharing the examination. A motion was made and seconded to authorize an entrance examination for the Police Department. Motion carried. Chief Foster reported the Washington State Fire Service Training is financing the training of about 45 recruits from various departments and this training is to be conducted at the Kent station with Assistant Chief Berg as supervisor of instructors. A letter from Michael Upton, requesting an accurate description of all the reasons for his removal from the Law Enforcement Eligibility List, was read. A motion was made and seconded to authorize the Secretary to write a letter to Mr. Upton and invite him to the next Commission meeting, at which time he would be given the information. Upon resumption of the meeting, a motion was made and seconded to remove the following names from the Law Enforcement Eligibility List: Alexander Perez, hired in Tukwila Lindsey D. Williams, failed background Kenneth M. Hebert, failed background John T. Eliadis, failed background Aubrey A. Smith, failed background Ronald W. Quincy, failed background Kurt E. Rasco, failed background Bradley D. Ray, failed background Motion carried. The next meeting date is February 21, 1980, 8:00 a.m. at the Fire Department headquarters. Meeting adjourned.
