AUGUST 22, 2001 MEETING MINUTES

A/C Hamilton, Chief Crawford, A/C Marzono, others present
Chair Zaratkiewicz called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m.
I. COMMISSION BUSINESS:
II. HEARING:
1. The Appeal of Justin Poe was continued until the September 26'h Civil
Service Meeting. Ron Banister asked if a time limit exists on this issue.
Jed Aldridge answered that the new Corrections Officer eligibility lists
will be available at the next Civil Service meeting and that by that time,
this issue would become a mute point.
• III. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Accept Into Record
1. Chair Zaratkiewicz moved to approve the minutes from the July 25, 2001
Civil Service Meeting.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. Accept into Record
Chair Zaratkiewicz asked those present to review items one through three.
1. Certification letter dated August 8, 2001 from Acting Chief Examiner
Aldridge establishing the Civil Service Secretary & Chief Examiner
Eligibility List.
2. Letter dated August 15, 2001 to Natalie Winecka confirming her
appointment to the position of Civil Service Secretary & Chief Examiner

3. Letter dated August 15, 2001 from Chief Crawford dated to Wendy
Butterworth congratulating her on being hired as a probationary Record
Specialist for the City of Kent Police Department, effective September
4, 2001.
There being no discussion, Chair Zaratkiewicz moved to accept items one and
three into record. Seconded and carried.
Chair Zaratkiewicz asked Jed Aldridge to introduce Natalie Winecka as the new
Civil Service Chief Examiner. Jed introduced Natalie and explained that she
had successfully passed the testing process and will begin her new duties on
September 4, 2001. Natalie will begin Police Captains Assessment lab training
on September 10, 2001.
Chair Zaratkiewics moved to accept item two into record. Seconded and
carried.
• B. Action Items for Discussion
1. The memo dated August 6, 2001 from A/C Marzano requesting that the
Entry Level Firefighters Eligibility List be extended to December 28,
2001 - the third extension - was approved. Seconded and carried.
2. The letter dated August 15, 2001 from Chief Crawford to Ronald Harvey
notifying him that he has approved his request for reinstatement as a
Corrections Officer for the Kent Police Department effective August
23, 2001 subject to a one-year probationary period and approval of the
Civil Service Commission at their August 22"d meeting was approved.
Seconded and carried.
3. The memo dated August 15, 2001 from Chief Crawford to the Commission
requesting approval to reinstate Chris Ward as a City of Kent
Corrections Officer pending completion of a modified background check
was approved. Seconded and carried.

Chair Zaratkiewicz extended gratitude to Acting Civil Service Chief Examiner, Jed
Aldridge for his support during the transition and recruitment of a new Civil
Service Chief Examiner. In addition, Chair Zaratkiewicz welcomed Natalie Winecka
as the new Civil Service Chief Examiner.
Chair Zaratkiewicz then made a motion to adjourn. Seconded and carried. The
meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
The next regular Civil Service Meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday,
September 25, 2001.
