Councilmen Berlin, Chittenden, Madison, Nadell , Look , Overlock and
Taylor .
.Minutes of January 4" were read and approved.
A petition signed by forty-rive residents of the City , to
retain the Night Watchl[a.xi Conover oil the force ; was read and
upon iiioti on it was unaxii iaously decided to have only one i[an on
the Police force after the first of February.
The Coi[lrilittee upon resolutions reported t1'le following, which
upon motion was unanliilously accepted, ordered placed in full upon
the niirluted and a copy sent to the Wife of the deceased:

good and welfare of the City and coi[ii[n.zxii.ty ; aiid it appears I[leet and
fitting' that this City Coulicil express its appreciation of lilts
efforts for tine general good , alld extend to his family its syinp'cctriy
and condolence ixi their hour of revere trial; it is therefore : `
RESOLVED , that in the death of E . Vd. 1?er. ester , the coiaimni ty
has lost an energetic , public spirited citizen, and extraordinary
worker for the colimionweal , and a big hearted nun of large and com-
prehexlsive ideals.
His life in the coliiiuercial world was one of constant and rapid
growth.
In his social life he was clean, affable , easy of approach and
generally popular .
Hi s how was one of peace , plenty and happiness , and the enter-
tainment therein most cordial arld hoslUltable.
The place he filled in the coliullullity will be long Vacant .
RESOLVED , further that We do extend the tree family of the de-
ceased, in their bitter sorrow t.rie sincere sylapathies of this council ;
that this resolutioxi be spread at large upon the records of this
ineeting; and copies thereof be forwarded by tree City olerx to the
wife and to the irlother of t1le deceased.
The treasurer 's report was received and placed upon rile .
The Street Col[;iaittee reported unfavorable in redlxard to
buying the D11larway bitumen , upon motion the recci[ar[[endation of

The City Attorney riled his ppinion with the Council in
reward to the itY.tter of daif&6e claim of tr.e Seattle Nati.on.al
Bank for bursted water pipes , which was to t.•e effect that the
clans be not alloyed. Upon motion the claim was held over
two weeks .
