Regular meeting of the City Council, present Nlayor Thornton,
Councilmen Bovell., Curran, Pozzi , Shaffer, Strain , Shinners and
lVoodi-north.
Correction to minutes of &lay 21 1_960.
Piotion to give permission to the property owners in the
Kentwood Hills Addition to hook to our sewer was duly seconded
and passed.`
On the Kent Highlands motion , delete operating on the motion.
Also motion duly seconded and passed.

Emerson B. Thatcher, City Attorney, announced that the j
damage claims of Yasuo Narita was turned over to our insurance
carrier who is defending the rights of the City.
Clerk's and Treasurers reports were presented, accepted and
placed -on file.
The City Engineer reported that the Kent lIighlands hauling;
operation was being c,-�rried out within. the designated hours of the
contract. Mr. Cederholm said they i%ould discontinue all operations
not within the scope of the contract. Iir. Sherwood had received
only one complaint ffom an individual but they said it didn 't
disturb them to much. The Mayor requested Nlr. Sherwood to write
Mr. Cederholm, telling him the Council expected him to stay within.
the letter of the law of the contract .
Mr. Sherwood announced that the Planning; Commission had not
had a legal hearing on the gravel operation on Reith Road so now
th ey are having a legal hearing on 1`Iay 25 , 1960. Councilman Strain
inquired as to the amount of the bond that the Fr,-,vel operator
should produce. The City Attorney stated that it would not be
necessary till after the hearing.
Bids that were opened and read for gasoline at 3P.M. on
May 13 , 1960 for a. 1 year contract were read to the :Council. Bids
were as follows : Standard Oil Co. of Calif. 1-'rem. .28 Reg. .24
Richfield Prem. .282 Reg. . .242
Shell Oil Co. Prem. .280 Reg. .240
Union Oil Co. Prem. .257 Reg. .217
Motion was- made, duly seconded and passed to award the bid to Union
Oil Co. of California for a one year contract for gasoline.
Councilman Woodworth announced that he had received. a Letter
from the N.P. R.R. Co. stating they would not pay anything on the
realignment of State Street.Councilman Woodworth said he-would
proceed to try to get the actual cost of realignment from the
I,i .P. R.R. Co.
Councilman Woodworth spoke on restrictions on certain streets
for heavy trucks.
Letter was read from Governor H osellini 's Sec 'y Kay McDonald.
stating that the Governor had a previous appointment for June 6, 1960.
and could not attend the Council meeting of that date but if it
was agreeable the Governor would like Mr. _I'ia.r. vin Powell to make the
presentation of the Safety Council aw-�rd. Coun#1woman Bovell moved.
to accept the Governors offer of Mr. Powell the award to
Mrs. Danielson of the Safety Council. I oti_on d.u)_y seconded and passed.
If it would be more convenient Alayor Thornton could present the
award, saving Mr. Powell the long trip from Olympia
A letter was received and read from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce
Bureau of Census, Tacoma, Mr. Ray D. Shave, stating that the preliminary
count of the census for the City of Kent was 8,987. This number may
change.
A .letter from Mr. Charles A. Campbell of I=ioneer Street was read
stating that he would. like to put in a sidewalk. He requested
permission to put in a 4 ft. instead of a 6 ft . sidewalk. The letter
was referred tc the City Engineer.
A letter-,. was read from Emerson B. Thatcher presenting a deed
from Mr. Kehr on Kenosia Street to the City of Kent. This deed
was given in connection with the vacation on Clark Street. Motion
was made for the Attorney to draw up the necessary ordinance for
the Kehr dedication. Iviotion duly seconded and passed.
Mr. Charles from Renton presented a resolution for each member
of the Council to look over. This resolution was to make application
for Federal funds for flood control. through the drainage ditchs. ()n
this project the Government will put up 95% and the co-sponsors 5%.
The 5% includes easement etc . After discussion on the drainage ditch
proposal Councilman Shinners moved that this be referred to a committee
and for them to report back at the next meeting on their findings.

Larry Woodworth, Ted Strain, Emer. on `Thatcher and gin er
Mayor Thornton appointed Duncan A. Bonjorni as Police Judge
and asked. Mr. Bonjorni to come up before the Clerk to be uworn
into office. This being done the Council_ confirmed the Mayors
appointment by motion passed.
Councilman Pozzi gave information on the Saltair Hills
Community Club. They would like to know more about city government.
At this time the Mayor offered to help them in any way he could
regarding information on city government .
Walter G. Ramsey presented a plaque of bronze metal to the
Mayor and Council to be placed on the water pump house on West hill.
Motion was made duly seconded and passed to have the Glerk write
a letter to Hil'1 and Ingman in appreciation for. the plaque.
The. Clerk read a letter of resignation from James P. Curran.
Councilman Shaffer said it is a regret to dose Mr. Curran as
Councilman as he has been an asset to the City Government and has
worked diligently with no concern for his o-wn personal business.
lie has worked and developed a. great water system for our city.
Also Mayor Thornton spoke well of the continuous service
Mr. Curran has given the City and the community. 1',,otion was made,
duly seconded and Dassed to accept the resignation of Councilman
Curran. Resignation effective June 1, 1960.
Councilman Shaffer moved that Mayor Thornton appoint a.
committee to make a study of the City J'Jara-er, type govenment.
Motion duly seconded and passed . Mayor Thornton appointed Couriclman
Pozzi, Strain and Shaffer , also Emerson Thatcher, City Atty. to the
committee.
Councilman Curran announced he would. act on committees in
outside clubs other than Council, such as Chamber of Commerce, etc.
