Kent , Washington January 5 , 1959.
Regular meeting of the city council present Mayor Thornton _
Councilmen; Curran, Pozzi, Scott , Shaffer , Strain, Woodworth;
Minutes approveTjof the last regular meeting as printed,
except ; delete from the amendment', that was made on the
housing project, in regard to maintenance."set forth
standard maintenance and five year painting" ; also include
in the Planners report that there will be a written report
from our Planners by the end of January 1.959.
Mr. Sherwood reported that the Planning Commission took
action on the t' Smoke and Noise Ordinance" and rejected
same.
Mr. Sherwood reported that he had a plat to present from
iir. Frazier and his wife on the West side , and recommended
that a hearing be held on the 19th. day of January.
After examination of the plat by the council , Motion was
made and duly seconded to set the hearing date on the Plat
as recomended by the city Engineer Mr. Sherwood. , Jan,1M8
at the city hall in the council chambers at $' O' clock P.M.
, City Engineer stated to the council that they would have
the pleasure of having the cross wn1k in service at West
Meeker this coming week.
Mr. Thatcher City Attorney stated to the council that there
were no traffic signs placed on North Washington Ave. as yet
and the State Department. should be' notified of-."the same.
Councilman Scott had .no report other wise than the Steel Head
Fishing was good in t-he river, and he had a letter from, a
Firm to supply rat control At the dump for $ 30.00 per month
no action taken on the controil4 , because the Seattle King Co.
control, are tak&ng care of the rat condition.
Councilman Curran made a report on the Housing Program
and thought he might have a complete report by next meeting.
Mayor Thornton announced the hearing open on Merrie Hill
Plat No. 2 no one objected so declared the hearing closed
and called for the reading of the ordinance, Ordinance read
and after discussion on the plat the Ordinance was by motion
approved and adopted.
Letter read from Armstrong and. Crane attorneys from Auburn
representing Mr. Raben Pederson who owns property at 4th. and
Titus that the city is interested for a Library site, this
letter was in answer to our letter offtning $10, 500.00, for
the property. Letter from Mr. Edmundson requesting further
information of the sale, .
Motion made and duly seconded to place in the hands of the
Building Committee for study, Curran voting ney motion
carried.
;Motion made and duly seconded to reconsider the motion,
motion passed.
After lengthyydiscussion on the matter Councilman Curran
made a motion to instruct the City Attorney to prepare necessary
Resolution for condemnation of the Pederson and Edmundson
property, -qnd employe council as necessary, and giving them
30 days before action.Motion lost.
Ordinance No. 1007 approving and accepting deeds for street
purposes read and by motion passed. t'
Ordinance Nol 100g regulating the Fire Department read and
by motion passed.
Ordinance no. 1008 approving a plat of portions of land
Merrie Hill No. 2 Addition, by motion passed.
Resolution No. 404; I herby move that a resolution of the
Council of the City of Kent Washington, providing for the
issuance of bonds of Local Improvement District No. 237
of the city in the total principal sum of $43 ,187. 56. . the
above motion made by Pozzi , seconded by Strain was duly
adopted by a vote of 6,yes 0 No.
Motion passed to have City Attorney prepare necessary
documents.
Councilman Shaffer made a motion and passed to have the
finance committee with the clerk make up rules for purchasing

Mayor Thornton suggested that the placque of the police depart
ment be displayed. in the city hall , for traffic record, and
for the clerk to get the other two of past years.
Mr. Sherwood recommended to the council that certain streets
be accepted for maintenance as gravel streets. Motion made
and passed to accept for maintenance as gravel streets
Crest Ave. from Chicago to Hemlock; Laural Street from
Crest to the East end. Hemlock from Crest Ave. to the
East End.
Councilman Shaffer ststaed that the drainage was in a very
bad way in the new additions on Knob Hill, and made a motion
to have the Engineeer give an estimate on the situation, and
or proceed with a district , motion carried.
Mayor Thornton introduced Mr. Buffington of the Auburn
Radio Station, and he said that Kent will have a remote
control from the station at Auburn soon.
Mr. Thatcher delivered to the clerk the assumption agreement
with the Obrien ,,later Company, and at this time it was proper t
to draw a warrent for $5, 000.00, and as soon as that was done
he would prepare deed for bill , of sale , .
Mr. Thatcher also reported on the progress of the Thomas
water system, and that they were in the procees of calling
for bids.
at the request of Councilman Shaffer Mr. Sherwood reported
on the progress of the land description of the Ranny Well
sit near Auburm.
Councilman Shaffer drew the attention of the council of
the high gas bill at the new water and street Utility Build-
ing and the large phone bills at the Treatment Plant .

Petition presented and read for annexation of property
contiguous to the city and the City Engineer presented
letter that the petition presented had signatures
representing 83 .8 % of the assessed valuation as recorddd
in the King County Treasurers Office.Motion passed to have
the attorney draw necessary papers.
