Regular meeting of the City Council present Mayor Thornton, councilmen Curran, Pozzi , Shaffer, Strain, ; Notion duly made and passed to accept the minutes as printed of the last regular meeting, with the following corrections. Councilman Woodworth made a motion to commend Councilman Curran on the fine work he has achived on the water system, source and distribuation. , Motion passed to accept Contract VI Rock Creek Main. Report of Officers presented and by motion placed on file. Budget , Treasurers, and Clerks. Mr. Shekrwood city engineer reported that he approved the temporary road across the city property, for the Legion to have aceess to their property while they are constructing their new Legion Hall. Councilman Pozzi reported on the Police situation, and read a letter from the Chief of Police, in regard to Officer Foxley that he was in the Hospital for observation, and that the police members would work an hour a day more to fill the gap, and the request was for the council to pay for his time off for the month of June because he has used up all his days off and sick leave, and that we should go ahead with an,-:.examination for a new Sergeattof Police. Motion made and passed to allow SergeafitFoxley his salary for June.Motion made and passed to - proceed with an examination for a new Sergeat.t. Councilman Curran announced that the meeting with the Obrien and Hamilton Road Water Companyts was posponed until they had more time to think the question over, and it would be announced when the meeting would be, ahead of time. Councilman Strain announced that he was making a great study of the proposed new street light system. Mr Vartlaubc of Arthur' s Chicken Dinner requested of the council to consider street light system in their section of the City:Mr. Strain reported that they have not had a Library meeting as yet on account that Mr. Parsons has been away and he is now in the Hospital. Mr. Sherwood reported on the school water main extending East on 240th.Street that he recommended that the school install a six inch main, but that it should be eight inch for future planning, so I would recommend that the city pay the difference between the 611 and the $", and that the Kendall Construction Co install the line.Motion made and duly passed to have the city pay the difference on the water pipe , also Councilman reported on the item about Kent in the Engineer' s Magazine about the construction of the new source for water.Curran also reported on the Washington Cities item on the increase in population that Kent was mentioned in with the other cities that had a large increase. Water Rights were submitted to the council and they were refered to the Water Committee. Petition was read for the vacation of an alley between 5th. and 6th. Ave. extending from Willis Street to Crow Street. Motion passed to refer to the Planning Commission. Letter read from a Law Firm representing Mr. Calvert on Alexander Ave. requesting the City to move a culvert that puts water down on Mr. Calverts property where he intends to build a new house, the letter signed �y Mr. C.Henry_Heckendorn of Renton.The letter was refered to our CAty Attga nej' Mr. Thatcher for reply and action. '. . Request was read before the council from Olson Realt$r;,,Qo on North Central Ave. requesting a 'Reserved for Business Parking in front of the Realty Office , to keep large trucks from park- ing in front of the place of Business.Request was refered to the Police Committee for action. Ex-Mayor Mooney was present at the meeting and spoke on a location of the World Fair, this location should be between Peasley Canyon and the Des Moines High-Way, this would be a fine location because it would be half way between Seattle and Tacoma, with ample parking and large vacant areas. Councilman Curran also spke in favor of the same location and stated and read a letter from Mr. Jager Mananger of the National Bank of Washington pointing out that favorable , continued; continued; conditions existed in this area over that whithSeattle could offer on account of the traffic conditions that would exist. Councilman Curran read a Resolution for the location of the World Fair. Motion made and passed to adopt Resolution No. 401, and have the clerk mail with a letter attached to all the Cities in the area and various clubs and press. j Mr. Hartlaub requested the council to study the feasability of having set backs for buildings on State Hiway No. 1 up to 45 ft. Mr. & Mrs. R.E.Masman was present at the meeting and in- quired of the council if they could obtain a rear acess road on their property instead of crossing the 99 Highway, which is againett the law. Councilman Shaffer stated that we could y,tio� refer this problem to our Planners. Two girls from the High School was at the meeting and tak- ing notesfor Allstate, Miss Wynstra and Swetnam. 7 Ordinance No. 986 read and by motion adopted to accept a deed to a street9 in - North Park Addn. l�l' Councilman Strain recomended that we purchase letters for the entrance of the City Hall, and instruct the Park Board to replace the name Kent on the Memerial at the Recreation Park on North Central. Councilman Shaffer made a motion and passed to make public to the people in Kent a challenge from the Auburn Mayor Jack Denise , It that the City of Auburn through a clean up session will be cleaner thafi'Kent".this challenge will be in force and effect until the World Fair is held in the west side of Kent in 1960. Two bills form Hill & Ingman .on. the Ranny Well and Test Holes at Rock Creek was called to the attention ,of the council by Councilman Curran stating that they were ,not,.as the contract called for. Motion made by Shaffer to pay the claims but this motion failed for the lack of a second. Motion made and passed to draw warrents for all claims presented ,except Hill & Ingman.
